AbstractIn recent years there has been a great deal of change in the secondary schools in Solomon Islands as, within a four-year period, 63 community high schools opened their doors to students who would otherwise not have had access to secondary education. The authors of this article examine how this remarkable increase in the number of schools affects the role of the school principals, and suggest that those who understand the changed nature of secondary schooling are more likely to become effective leaders in their schools.
